What Is Hip Arthritis?
Living with hip pain can turn everyday moments, like walking, sitting, or standing, into daily challenges. At Ameglio Orthopedics, we provide clear solutions to help you regain comfort and mobility. Hip arthritis happens when the smooth cartilage inside the hip joint wears down. Without this cushion, bones rub together, leading to stiffness and swelling. This is often called bone-on-bone hip pain. The most common type is osteoarthritis of the hip, a condition linked to aging, past injury, or everyday wear. The second type is rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease that causes the body to attack its own joints. Both types can affect how well the hip joint moves and how it feels day to day. Most people feel hip arthritis pain in the groin, outer thigh, or buttocks. The pain can also radiate down the leg. Over time, it can make walking, standing, or bending difficult. If you've noticed discomfort in your hip, schedule a consultation at our Fort Myers, FL practice to learn more about your treatment options.
How Is Hip Arthritis Treated?
Treatment for hip arthritis depends on how advanced the condition is and how much it affects your life. We look at your goals, lifestyle, and how your hip is affecting your daily routine before recommending treatment. Some people feel better with nonsurgical care. Others may need surgery to improve movement and reduce pain. Nonsurgical options may include:
- Physical therapy
- Anti-inflammatory medications
- Cortisone injections
- Activity changes or walking aids
For advanced cases of hip osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, surgery may be the right choice. Hip replacement surgery removes the damaged joint and replaces it with artificial parts that move more smoothly. This is often recommended for people with severe bone-on-bone hip pain.
What Does Hip Arthritis Feel Like?
Hip pain often begins as a mild ache that comes and goes. Over time, it may become more steady or intense. The following symptoms could signal hip arthritis:
- A dull or aching pain in the groin, outer thigh, or buttocks
- Stiffness after sitting or resting
- Pain that worsens with activity or weather changes
- Grinding or clicking sounds during movement
- Limited motion in the hip joint
- Difficulty walking, climbing stairs, or bending
Hip Arthritis Reviews
I did not come to FL for 3 months and plan to get a total hip replacement, but I was in pain and things fell in place and I was able to get into Dr. Ameglio for an appt. very quickly. I couldn't be happier with my timely surgery and before my 4 week post op I am all healed and able to do what I want. With the excellent physical therapy I got from Shawn Troyer pre op, I was able to go into surgery well prepared. They said my fast recovery was from doing phy therapy ahead of time and doing all the phy therapy after. I thank you for making this a great experience for me and having me ready to go when we leave in a couple days for WI..God bless you! Diane Tappa
I had my hip replaced on Dec 18, 2024 and had amazing results at 77 years old. I was walking without a walker after 4 days and no cane at 3 weeks, then I cut the grass! The therapist said it was the smallest incision he had ever seen for a hip replacement. I did go to physical therapy and was about 90% after 2 months and of course pain free. I had been in a lot of pain and I wish I would have known about Dr. Ameglio sooner, his SuperPath method really worked out well for me . After visits with several orthopedic surgeons I thought he was the most competent and experienced. After my first visit and speaking with a 90+ year old WW2 paratrooper sitting in the waiting room who said he had his hip replaced and it was "no big deal", that sealed the deal. His entire office is professional and friendly and my thanks go out to them as well.
Dr. Ameglio performed the superpath surgery for my hip replacement. He and his staff are so kindhearted, you are their priority. I never felt rushed one time, they go above and beyond to make you comfortable. He gave me what I am calling my miracle leg. Forever Grateful.
Dr Ameglio replace my R hip beginning of October 2025. The recovery was interesting for my, all went by the book, walking with walker since day one. With a cane after 10 days. My tips; ice very often, for me it replaced pain medication. Also ask for a referral for physical therapy to continue. I went to the Babcock facility. Now 3 months later, I am biking , walking and swimming as before, even better.
